During the era of classical antiquity, in ancient Greece, Liberal Arts, one of the oldest subjects in the world, was a way to prepare individuals for civil service and leadership and was considered the ultimate mark of an educated person. The aim was to produce leaders who were well-rounded, virtuous, ethical, and have general knowledge of a wide range of subjects as well as a mastery of several transferable skills. Liberal Studies continues to instill the same values today and is why I chose Liberal Arts as a field of study.
The Hutchins School of Liberal Studies Program is within the larger institution of Sonoma State University and is a nationally known interdisciplinary educational community. It is a seminar based program that involves both the professor and the student in the learning experience. As a collective, teachers and scholars meet together after having examined, read, and written about a topic/text. As a community we discussed our findings and interpretations.
The focus was, and is, to address challenging topics using seemingly indirect text, yet intentional, in a direct way. Students challenge bias', develop knowledge, and exchange meaningful discourse. Because Hutchins' seminars analytically explore humanity, asking tough questions many people are afraid to ask, classes are often thought provoking and life changing.
Student's Perspective.
The Hutchins Liberal Studies program is both empowering and educational. Scholars form a community of which is motivated to serve society in positive and meaningful ways. It prepares students to face the many challenges relevant in society today. As an undergraduate ready to serve you, your organization, and the greater community, I look forward to getting to know you and your organization as you consider me a candidate for your team.
